Thanks Kiwi for the link, I just bought a headset mic/speaker assembly and a bone ear/mic combo too. I will report back to the forum which one works best.
Also on the walkies... if you buy one's that are greater than .5 watts then you will need to visit www.fcc.gov, for a radio operators permit. It is $85 bucks for 5 years and allows you to use up to 5 watt radios. Many of Hells Hammer use Rhino 110's for the GPS aspect and stronger radio output of 3 watts.

This is my first post here, and while this is an older post, it's in my lane so I thought I add my thoughts, as communications are always critical and near and dear to me.
Motorola talkabout and similar blister pack radios are fine for many situations. But we've gone to a more serious radio system. We use Icom VHF radios with headsets. Our team has had great luck, range and reliability with them. Some of the other teams also serious about communications are using Icoms on the UHF band. Both will give you about the same range but each has its advantages.
The Icom model we starting using, IC-F3S, was the radio used by the US Army until about 2003. It works well for our applications and gets great range and clear audio. You get what you pay for.
I also set up and run the communications for the Oklahoma D-day event and the Allies side in particular. We set up an off field TOC (Tactical Operations Center) and primarily use VHF communications. That field is over 800 acres now and we have good comms with every area of it. VHF and UHF are both FM "line of sight" transmissions, so deep ravines and large hills can degrade signals (Motorola talkabout and all FRS/GMRS radios are UHF).
The VHF radios are 5 watts compared to the Motorolas which are .5 - 1 watt typically. That's only one factor in their performance. Their antenna system is much better (key communications component). FRS/GMRS radio, by FCC regulation, cannot have a removable antenna and are stuck with the little antenna on those radios. Also audio is much better so you can actually hear conversations much better.
As mentioned above I would avoid VOX always. Don't use it.
I would also avoid throat mics. While they have a "cool" factor, you be much happier with a noise-cancelling boom mic. The issue with throat mics is they only work well if exactly on the sweet spot of your throat. The problem is the throat mic will move and your transmission will come in garbled...but you don't know it...but your teammate will know it because he won't be able to understand you.
I'm happy to help with any communications. Pm me here or email me at srisken623@aol.com

I use Midland GXT 1050 with Iasus NT3 Black ops throat mic with finger or large PTT.
The midlands are awesome mine comes with whisper mode. That means I can speak with no tone and it heard on other radios Lima Charlie! _________________ o3skout "skout"
